As is my passion and usual style of writing, the majority of this book will expound passages found in the Bible. This is biblical theology rather than historic theology, grounded in the assurance that the Bible is true, accurate and authoritative. However, an overview of the history of this debate is necessary initially, if for no other reason than to assure us that there is no single understanding of predestination that we must adopt—we do not risk heresy by disagreeing with Luther, Calvin, Arminius or Wesley. Despite the claims of the last few centuries, we can recognise that, while those teachers were powerfully used by God in their own generations, they are relative newcomers to this debate and no more infallible than you or I.
